A new immunotherapy trial to treat mesothelioma looks promising – could this offer patient’s ‘realistic hope?’
Mesothelioma is an aggressive, treatment-resistant cancer caused by asbestos exposure. There are a number of types of mesothelioma. However, pleural mesothelioma – the type which affects the lining of the lung – is the most common.
Sadly, there is currently no cure for mesothelioma. However, research continues into better, more effective treatments and it is hoped that one day we will discover a cure.
Immunotherapy shows positive results:
One of the most recent clinical trials for pleural mesothelioma has been conducted at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa and has shown positive results for pleural mesothelioma patients.
The trial involves a combination of two immunotherapy drugs. These immunotherapy drugs are:
- Pembrolizumab: This is a humanised antibody which blocks the protective mechanism on cancer cells and allows the immune system to destroy them.
- CRS-2017: This is a viral vaccine.
The new research combines the two drugs, which have already been effective against mesothelioma individually.
Dr Tanvetyanon who is leading the research is extremely positive about the advances. He says; “This is exciting. We now can offer something with realistic hope. We haven’t had anything like this for mesothelioma in a long time.”
