On the 27th April 2024, Nick Maskell, a Professor of Respiratory Medicine at Bristol University and Consultant Pleural Physician at North Bristol NHS Trust and friend of Oliver & Co Solicitors, successfully reached the finish line after 105 miles of cycling and 2.5km of vertical height! This was achieved on the background of his fractured wrist falling, off his bike 5 weeks earlier whilst training !
In support of Mesothelioma UK, Nick took on the challenge of participating in the Mallorca 312 where he was joined by over 8,000 participants. The mammoth task ahead of him included cycling over the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, running along the North of the island.
His fantastic efforts meant that he raised over £26,000 for the incredible charity Mesothelioma UK, which will no doubt help them in supporting patients and carers affected by mesothelioma. Everyone at Oliver & Co Solicitors is proud of Nick’s achievement and are delighted to have been able to support him by donating £2,000 to the charity.
Nick said on finishing the challenge; ‘Thank goodness that challenge is ticked off the bucket list! My challenge was made much harder because of the recent wrist fracture and the next day my arm ached more than my legs!! Thank you Oliver and Co for sponsoring a spot in my racing jersey.’
Well done, Nick!
What is Mesothelioma and what do Mesothelioma UK do?
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that generally affects the lining of the lungs but can also affect the lining of the stomach and other organs of the body. Unfortunately, this disease develops gradually over time and is incurable.
9 out of the 10 diagnosed cases of mesothelioma are linked to a person’s exposure to asbestos. The tiny asbestos fibres can easily get stuck in a person’s lungs meaning that over time, the lungs become damaged. Mesothelioma doesn’t typically cause any problems after initial contact with asbestos but can develop more than 20 years or more after first exposure.
Mesothelioma UK is a dedicated charity that was set up to support those with a mesothelioma diagnosis across the UK. They have a network of clinical nurse specialists who strive to provide the best care and support they possibly can. They have set up local support groups UK wide to offer help and support to patients, their family members and carers. They are simply there when people need them the most.
