Asbestos Justice has been keeping up to date with the campaign for veterans, in their pursuit for mesothelioma compensation, in line with compensation available to civilians.
In December, the Government announced that anyone diagnosed with mesothelioma after 15th December 2015 would be given the option of receiving either a War Disablement Pension, or a one off, lump sum payment of £140,000. This sum will be paid, regardless of the sufferer’s age at the time of diagnosis.
The announcement was welcomed by campaigners but the fight was not yet over. Around 60 veterans were diagnosed as living with mesothelioma prior to 15th December 2015 and so would not be eligible for the £140,000 payment. Instead, they had no choice but to apply for a War Disablement Pension, the maximum rate of which for a non-married naval veteran is just over £31,000 a year. Bearing in mind that the average survival rate following a diagnosis of mesothelioma is around just 18 months, the Disablement Pension would not come close to the average civil mesothelioma compensation settlement of between £137,000 and £153,531.
Campaigners persevered and it was announced on 29th February 2016 that the new lump sum payment scheme was being extended to those diagnosed with mesothelioma prior to the 15th December 2015. This is thought that around 60 veterans could be entitled to mesothelioma compensation under the revised plans.
This latest announcement is a huge victory for veterans suffering with mesothelioma. While no amount of money can compensate for the pain and suffering caused by a mesothelioma diagnosis, it can give sufferers peace of mind that their loved ones will be looked after.
