The amount of asbestos imported to the U.S more than doubled last year.
The Department of Commerce and the U.S International Trade Commission has released data, which shows a dramatic increase in the amount of raw asbestos imported to the U.S. in 2016.
705 metric tons of asbestos:
In 2015, around 343 metric tons of asbestos were imported to the U.S. It has now been revealed that this figure more than doubled in 2016 when 705 metric tons of the deadly substance was imported.
Asbestos is highly regulated in the U.S. and the mining of asbestos is illegal. However, it is extremely worrying to see such a rise in importation.
What has caused this increase?
This spike in asbestos importation may have been caused by the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) amendments. These amendments could see a review by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and a comprehensive ban on asbestos. However, this may never happen under the Trump administration.
It is extremely disappointing that such a developed country as the U.S. is still using asbestos and importing such large quantities. This puts both U.S workers, and those working in countries where asbestos is mined, at extreme risk.
The only way to eradicate asbestos conditions such as mesothelioma, asbestosis and pleural thickening, is to stop all use of asbestos. We welcome a worldwide ban of asbestos. A ban on the substance is the only way to stop more families from being devastated by asbestos disease.
