Mesothelioma is a cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. The disease most commonly affects the lungs or abdomen, due to asbestos fibres being inhaled or ingested. Sadly, although treatments for mesothelioma have been developing and improving in recent years, there is no known cure for the cancer.
University of Sheffield
A big step forward for research into the prevention and treatment of mesothelioma is a new research centre which has opened at The University of Sheffield. The researchers have the ultimate aim of finding a cure for mesothelioma.
The University of Sheffield was chosen for the centre, the first of its kind in the UK, thanks to its previous research into mesothelioma.
UK has highest mesothelioma incidence
With more than 2,500 new diagnoses each year, the UK has the highest incidence of mesothelioma in the world, and it is hoped this new research centre will provide hope for the future of mesothelioma patients.
