An active agent found in Caribbean sea cucumbers has already started to be used in the treatment of ovarian cancer and researchers believe it could be effective in the treatment of mesothelioma.
A study conducted by the Comprehensive Cancer Centre of MedUni Vienna and Vienna General Hospital has found that trabectedin, an active agent in sea cucumbers may be “a promising new therapeutic option” for MPM [malignant pleural mesothelioma].
The study has found that when combining trabectedin with existing cancer treatments it was effective against cancer cells whilst having minimal side effects on healthy cells. In fact, when researchers combined a drug to target protein bcl-2 which prevents cell death, there is “a significant improvement in destruction of malignant pleural mesothelioma cells”.
Researchers concluded the study stating “Trabectedin therefore seems to be a new, effective and safe treatment option for this disease [mesothelioma]”.
