A recent study has shown that listening to music can help to relieve mesothelioma pain and lethargy.
The European Journal of Cancer Care describes the experiment and how the effects of listening to music can improve the pain, apprehension and fatigue associated with cancer.
Results have shown that patients, began to improve and feel better, after just six weeks, by simply listening to music at home five times a week.
Symptoms of mesothelioma
One most common symptom of malignant mesothelioma is pain. As the disease develops the patient’s pain will increase.
Shortness of breath and chest pain occurs for those patients who suffer with pleural mesothelioma, a cancer affecting the lining of the lungs.
Peritoneal mesothelioma, cancer affecting the lining of the abdomen, can often cause gastrointestinal issues with pain and bloating.
Pain control in mesothelioma patients
Pain due to mesothelioma can be relieved by radiation therapy or certain medications however the study and experiments have suggested that there is a cheaper and less toxic alternative.
In the study, 60 breast cancer patients were given home-based music intervention (HBMI), they listened to ambient mustic or natural sounds.
Those patients who were assigned to the HMBI listened to 30 minutes of music on an mp3 player at home, five times a week. These patients chose the genre of their music. After the sixth month experiment the effects of the HBMI was a positive outcome. “HBMI instantaneously reduced physical and mental fatigue,” write the researchers.
After six weeks, patients reported a five-point drop in the brutality of their symptoms. At 12 weeks, the patients had a seven-point drop in severity. After the sixth month the severity of their symptoms had decreased by almost nine points. The pain and lethargy levels were continuously improving over the duration of the research.
Patients doing the HBMI test mentioned the detachment of harmful thoughts about their cancer while partaking in this experiment.
The HBMI summary states that the experiment has “significantly reduced symptom severity, pain intensity, overall fatigue, general fatigue, emotional fatigue and vigor,”
Sadly, a cure has not yet been discovered for the asbestos cancer, mesothelioma. Pain relief is the most effective focus of the treatment and finding a treatment that has little to no side effects is a great step forward for patients. Positivity and quality of life will improve with those patients who endure less pain and the reduction of pain can clearly now come from listening to music as well as other more conventional methods.
