Mesothelioma Increasing Says HSE

Statistics from a Health and Safety Executive report conducted in 2014, which investigated the number of those who developed Mesothelioma has shown a significant increase from 1969 to 2011.  This included an increase in the number of mortalities of those who contracted the disease with the majority of deaths occurring within 12 months of diagnosis.

This increase is as a result of the latency period which is known as the period between the exposure to asbestos and the development of symptoms, which generally occur some 30 to 50 years after the initial exposure to asbestos.

Further statistics reveal that the number of deaths from Mesothelioma increased from 2291 in 2011 to 2535 in 2012 with men who worked in the building industry now being most at risk of developing the disease and especially those working in trades such engineering, carpentry and plumbing.

Unfortunately, these numbers are set to remain high until 2020.  However, the figures do not include the deaths where Mesothelioma is not recorded as the cause of death and, therefore, are not a true reflection of the number of those who die from this terrible disease.
