Managing Fatigue in Mesothelioma Patients

Mesothelioma is a rare, aggressive cancer that affects the lining of the organs, primarily that of the lungs. It is usually caused by the inhalation of airborne asbestos fibres. A common symptom of mesothelioma is fatigue, either caused by the cancer itself or as a side effect of treatment.

The Impact of Fatigue

Fatigue in mesothelioma patients can significantly affect both physical and emotional well-being. Physically, the persistent exhaustion that does not improve with rest can render even simple activities, such as dressing, feel overwhelming. This can lead to a reduction in independence, increasing the need for assistance from caregivers or family members. Patients often experience difficulties with concentration and cognitive function. Emotionally, the fatigue can contribute to feelings of frustration, sadness and social withdrawal, as patients may feel disconnected from their usual routines and social interactions.

Strategies for Managing Fatigue

While it may not be possible to completely eliminate fatigue, effective management strategies can help to improve comfort and quality of life.

  1. Exercise

Although it may appear counterintuitive, engaging in gentle movement can boost energy levels and reduce fatigue. Short walks or gentle stretching exercises can help maintain muscle mass, improve appetite, facilitate better sleep, elevate mood and alleviate stress.

  1. Eating well

Maintaining a well-balanced diet is crucial for sustaining energy levels and regaining your strength. Nutrition serves as the body’s primary source of fuel and adequate intake of nutrients is essential for maintaining strength. For patients experiencing loss of appetite or difficulty eating, consuming smaller, more frequent meals may help.

  1. Energy Conservation

Energy conservation is a technique that adjusts the way daily tasks are performed to minimise physical exertion and reduce fatigue. It involves the application of the 3 P’s – Prioritising, Planning and Pacing.

  • Prioritise: put your daily activities in order of importance and break tasks into smaller, more manageable segments if necessary;
  • Plan: decide when the activity needs to be done and spread more challenging activities throughout the day;
  • Pace: establish a balanced routine that incorporates periods of rest and activities, recognising that energy levels may fluctuate.

Dealing with fatigue as a mesothelioma patient in the UK requires a comprehensive approach that addresses physical, emotional, and nutritional needs. By effectively managing sleep, nutrition, exercise, stress, and seeking the appropriate medical support, patients can significantly improve their quality of life. With the right strategies in place, mesothelioma patients can regain a sense of control over their energy levels and maintain a sense of autonomy despite the challenges posed by their condition.
