Each year, the respiratory health community comes together for Love Your Lungs Week, a campaign started by The British Lung Foundation which is now known as Asthma + Lung UK. This is a week dedicated to promoting lung health and raising awareness about various lung diseases.

As you can imagine, this is an important week for us here at Asbestos Justice as it is an opportunity for us to raise awareness of asbestos-related lung diseases, a group of conditions that remain a significant public health concern despite increased regulation and awareness.

Unfortunately, there is not a week goes by that we don’t hear from someone who has had recent exposure to asbestos and so has been put at risk of developing an asbestos-related condition.

Asbestos-Related Conditions

The most common conditions include asbestosis, a chronic lung disease characterised by extensive lung scarring that impairs breathing; lung cancer, with asbestos exposure significantly heightening the risk, particularly among smokers; and mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive cancer affecting the lining of the lungs or abdomen, and almost exclusively linked to asbestos exposure. These diseases often develop years after exposure, making early detection and preventive measures crucial.

Importance of Awareness and Prevention

Love Your Lungs Week serves as a critical reminder of the importance of lung health, and, for us, the dangers posed by asbestos. Despite regulations limiting asbestos use, many older buildings and products still contain asbestos, posing ongoing risks. It is important that we continue to:

  • Educate: Informing the public about the dangers of asbestos and how to avoid exposure, particularly in older homes and buildings.
  • Screen: Encouraging individuals who have been exposed to asbestos to undergo regular health check-ups for early detection of related diseases.
  • Support: Providing resources and support for those diagnosed with asbestos-related diseases and their families.

Taking Action

Preventing asbestos exposure is the most effective way to reduce the risk of asbestos-related lung diseases. We can all take proactive steps to protect ourselves against the danger of asbestos, such as:

  • Identifying and Safely Removing Asbestos: Professional asbestos abatement services can safely remove asbestos from homes and workplaces.
  • Advocacy for Stronger Regulations: Supporting policies that aim to completely ban asbestos use and ensure strict enforcement of existing regulations.
  • Promoting Workplace Safety: Ensuring that workers in industries with potential asbestos exposure are equipped with the necessary protective gear and training.

Love Your Lungs

Love Your Lungs Week is not just a campaign but a call to action to protect our lungs from the silent threat of asbestos. By increasing awareness, promoting preventive measures, and supporting those affected, we can work towards a future where asbestos-related lung diseases are a thing of the past. Remember, loving your lungs means taking steps to keep them healthy and free from harmful substances like asbestos.
