Every 28th April, here at Asbestos Justice we take part in International Workers’ Memorial Day. This is a day that brings workers across the world together to remember those who have sadly lost their lives due to work and to continue the fight for the protection of those working in hazardous occupations.
This year’s theme
Each year there is a theme to the day and this year the theme is “Global: Organising for health and safety – a crucial part of union action”. This is a key theme for trade unions and working people, calling for workplaces and workers to get organised and in turn, create safer workplaces.
Whilst this year’s theme sadly won’t help our clients who were exposed to asbestos many years ago, it is hoped that it may help any future workers, preventing them from being exposed to this deadly material.
Asbestos is still a danger
Many people believe that asbestos is a hazard of the past and this is simply not the case. Each week we are contacted by someone who has had recent exposure to asbestos and is now facing decades of worry as to whether this will affect their health later in life. Often this can be construction workers who have been sent to do work before a risk assessment or survey has been carried out. If these workplaces were more organised and ensured the necessary checks were carried out before workers were sent in, their exposure to asbestos could easily be prevented.

On Friday, we will be marking the day with a moment of silence for our past clients who have sadly lost their fight with mesothelioma and asbestos disease.
