Every 28th April we mark International Workers’ Memorial Day (IWMD), a day that brings together workers and their representatives across the world to remember the dead and fight for the living.
Occupational health and safety is a human right
The theme for this year is ‘occupational health and safety is a human right’. Whilst this should always be the case, for all workers across the globe, sadly it is not and has not been in the past either.
All of our clients have been failed at some point in their working life and their health and safety has been put in danger, with profits put before people.
Too often we hear from clients that they were not provided with any protective breathing equipment nor told that asbestos was dangerous “because the companies didn’t know”. This is simply not the case and the recent victory against Cape shows that companies not only knew about the dangers, but actively prevented safety measures being put in place, regardless of the effect on the workers.
Asbestos is still a real danger
Although the various types of asbestos were banned in the UK by the year 2000, it is still widely used in some countries and is still present in buildings built before this time throughout the UK. Due to this, asbestos is still very much a danger and we regularly speak to people who have recently been exposed to asbestos at work because of lax health and safety on site.
