A licensed asbestos removal company has been fined for selling a boiler that contained as asbestos.

Anglian Demolition & Asbestos Limited had been working on a contract at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Ely. They had been involved in demolition work, which included the removal of asbestos at a boiler house at the hospital.

Having removed two boilers from the site, the company went on to sell them to Kings Boiler Hire Limited. It was later found that one of the boilers contained asbestos.

The matter was brought to the attention of The Health and Safety Executive and Anglian Demolition & Asbestos Limited were prosecuted at the Norwich Magistrates’ Court. The company pleaded guilty and was fined £2,750 and ordered to pay costs.

Following the hearing, Edward Crick, a HSE inspector said, “The dangers of asbestos fibres to health are well known. Asbestos fibres, and items that have asbestos intentionally added to them, are items that cannot legally be placed on the market.”

This case is yet another example showing asbestos is still a current health issue and it is unwise to assume that asbestos exposure is now a thing of the past. This is why it is important to raise awareness of asbestos and the dangers posed by exposure to the harmful material.
