We recently wrote about the US and Canada and how quite shockingly, they have yet to ban the use of asbestos. However, Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, has addressed the issue. At a conference in Ottawa he stated; “We’ve actually made the commitment that we are moving forward on a ban. We know that its impact on workers outweighs any benefits that it might provide.”
This will come as welcome news to campaigners against the use of asbestos and follows an announcement on 1st April 2016 that no asbestos products are to be used in the new construction or renovation of federal buildings in Canada.
While Canada still clearly has a way to go before a complete ban on asbestos is implemented, these changes are definitely a step in the right direction.
It is hoped that other countries will take inspiration from Canada and move to ban asbestos. The only way to prevent asbestos related conditions such as the incurable cancer, mesothelioma, is to stop people being exposed to asbestos. While a ban on the use of asbestos does not remove the threat of asbestos already in buildings, it does go some way to help create an asbestos free future.
