Mesothelioma, a cancer of the lining of the body’s organs, can be extremely difficult to diagnose. It can take weeks or months and often requires invasive procedures such as a thoracentesis or biopsy. Even after such steps have been taken the diagnosis may not be completely accurate.
The Test
Researchers in Japan have been developing a new blood test which it is hoped will diagnose mesothelioma more quickly and more accurately. The test uses an enzyme-linked system to detect a protein biomarker in the blood, N-ERC/mesothelin. Those suffering with mesothelioma over express this biomarker.
The Results
The test was found to be 95% accurate in diagnosing mesothelioma and 76% accurate when ruling out a mesothelioma diagnosis. Whilst it is clear the test is not infallible, these results are higher than those reported for other blood tests. Researchers studied biomarkers that have previously helped to diagnose pleural mesothelioma, however, they found the N-ERC/mesothelin biomarker to be the most effective.
Previous use of Biomarkers
This is not the first time that biomarkers have been used in mesothelioma research. In the US a blood test was approved for monitoring the condition, however such a test has never been used as a diagnostic tool.
Mesothelioma has a short survival time. Early diagnosis can allow a patient to explore more treatment options and offers a greater chance of long term survival. Further research is needed but this is a promising step in the right direction for mesothelioma sufferers.
