The first Friday in July each year is Action Mesothelioma Day. This is a day where anyone affected by mesothelioma, be they a sufferer or a loved one, can come together to raise awareness of the disease, educate others on the dangers of asbestos and remember those who have sadly lost their fight with the condition.

A minute of silence
Our clients, past and present, are never far from our thoughts and on 7th July, we will be observing a minute’s silence to allow us to remember our clients who have passed away and to think of them and their families.
Time for action
We also want to use Action Mesothelioma Day to raise awareness of a petition which could potentially have a huge impact on the incidence of mesothelioma in the future. The petition, which can be found here, is for there to be a central register of asbestos and for a phased removal of asbestos from all buildings.
The petition asks the Government to commit to a register so that it is known exactly where asbestos is located. Currently, there are many buildings containing asbestos where it hasn’t been identified or flagged. All too regularly we get enquiries from people who have recently been exposed to asbestos whilst working on or in buildings, and this could easily be avoided if there was a central register of asbestos which could be consulted before any maintenance work is started.
The second part of the petition calls for a plan for the safe removal of asbestos over the next 40 years. This is vital to ensure that mesothelioma does not continue to kill people in the UK. The only known cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos and so stopping the exposure is the only way to stop the disease.
We will be encouraging all our employees to sign and share the petition, as well as sharing it on our social media platforms on Action Mesothelioma Day.
Asbestos legacy
When we started pursuing claims for asbestos disease compensation, many years ago, it was thought that the incidence of mesothelioma in the UK would peak in the year 2016. In 2020, there were 2,544 deaths due to mesothelioma, this is an increase of 6% from 2019 and the average number of deaths over the previous eight years was 2,523. The number is not decreasing and the asbestos legacy is continuing far longer than anyone expected.
It is vital that the presence of asbestos in the UK is recorded and eventually removed, so that we can finally put this disease to bed and stop it from ruining people’s lives.
