Each year at the beginning of July, those affected by mesothelioma come together in support of Action Mesothelioma Day.
In past years there have been remembrance services, dove releases and talks from mesothelioma experts and warriors battling this awful condition.
This year will look a little different. Due to COVID-19, the usual meet ups cannot happen and so there are many virtual events taking place instead.
We will be joining in with the virtual events, including a minute of silence at 11am where we will take the time to think of all our clients who have sadly lost their battle with mesothelioma.
UK Mesothelioma Alliance (UKMA)
The UK Mesothelioma Alliance has a morning organised with presentations from clinical experts and stories from patients, Mavis Nye and Paul Cook, starting at 10:40am until 12:00pm, with a minutes’ silence at 11am.
Derbyshire Asbestos Support Team (DAST)
For those in the East Midlands, DAST will be posting videos of patient support in the morning, leading up to the silence at 11am, followed by videos from two mesothelioma patients.
Based in the South of England and encompassing London and the Home Counties, HASAG will be using their Facebook page to post videos from guest speakers, after the UKMA itinerary in addition to a butterfly release.
June Hancock Mesothelioma Research Fund
The June Hancock Mesothelioma Research Fund is hosting their annual Meet the Researchers event. This is an opportunity to discuss research into mesothelioma. The event is running from 1pm to 3pm and you need to register in advance for this.
London Asbestos Support Awareness Group
The London Asbestos Support Awareness Group is hosting a day of remembrance for those affected by mesothelioma and asbestos-related diseases. Their event will be held on Facebook and on their website. As well as a remembrance tree for the names of those people would like to remember, they will be reading poems and sharing messages of hope and love.
Merseyside Asbestos Victims Support (MAVS)
MAVS will be following the UKMA event with a dove release and a scroll of remembrance at 12pm.
Peritoneal Mesothelioma Virtual Support Group
The Peritoneal Mesothelioma Virtual Support Group will be starting at 9:30am with an hour-long Zoom meeting for patients and their families and carers to share their stories, before joining the online events arranged by UKMA.
Readley Asbestos and Mesothelioma Support Group
For those based in the North East, Readley Asbestos and Mesothelioma Support Group is hosting an event on Facebook, starting at 12:15pm. There will be a minutes’ silence followed by a live dove release. As part of their event, in the evening, the Gateshead Millennium Bridge will be lit up in blue.
