On 12th October 1984, the IRA bombed the Grand Hotel in Brighton. Tragically, five people died and thirty-nine were injured. Thirty-one years later the attack claimed its sixth victim. Back in January 2016 we wrote about James Woods who sadly passed away from mesothelioma. He was exposed to asbestos as one of the first police officers on the scene after the IRA bomb was detonated.
Before his death in December 2015, Mr Woods had started a civil mesothelioma claim against two police forces, the Metropolitan Police and Sussex Police. Following his passing, Mr Woods’ family continued the claim on behalf of his Estate.
We have recently found out that the compensation claim settled in February this year. The settlement figure has not been released and Mr Wood’s family and legal representatives have not made any comments.
Five people died in the initial blast. Mr Woods was later described as the sixth victim. He was among 30 officers at the bombsite who could all have been exposed to asbestos. Sadly, only time will tell if there are any further victims.
