What questions should you ask before starting a clinical trial?
There are many questions mesothelioma patients may have when considering whether to take part in a trial. We would suggest that you consider the benefits of the treatment versus the negative side effects it could have. You should also consider the stage of your asbestos cancer and how well you are. If you are too ill, the researchers may not accept you onto the trial.
How to get involved in a trial:
Your doctor may discuss potential trials with you, but you can also volunteer for trials yourself. There are currently 19 mesothelioma clinical trials still recruiting in the UK. You can find more details of these trials on the NHS website.
The decision to undertake a trial:
Some of our clients with mesothelioma have taken part in trials. We represented a Mr. M. who decided that taking part in a trial offered to him by his Consultant might give him benefits but would also potentially help the treatment of future mesothelioma patients. Mr M was considered well enough to undergo the trial and he felt that he had nothing to lose. It is clearly a very personal decision and one, which should be discussed with your doctor.
