History of the pier:
Victoria Pier in Colwyn Bay first opened in 1900. In 1903, the pier was extended and the first two pavilions on the pier were sadly destroyed in a fire. In 1934, asbestos sheeting (a fireproof material) was used in the construction of a third pavilion.
The pier saw a steady decline in visitors throughout the 1990s and eventually closed for good in July 2008. Since then the Grade II listed structure has become derelict. Since early 2017, the pier’s condition has deteriorated further, causing concern for local residents.
Asbestos sheeting puts people at risk:
In February 2017, the pier began collapsing and a storm in September caused further irreparable damage. As an emergency measure, some sections of the pier were demolished.
However, there is still asbestos sheeting present on the pier. The concern is that further bad weather could cause the asbestos sheeting to break up. This broken up sheeting could then end up on the sea or washed up on the beach.
The council has approved plans to dismantle the pier but now needs a marine licence from Natural Resources Wales (NRW).
