It is important for mesothelioma patients to keep as well as possible, particularly during treatment and recovery. To help with this, patients may find exercise of benefit.

Gone are the days of bed rest for patients as it has been found that exercise can help to reduce fatigue, improve strength and can even help elevate mood.

Clearly, when undergoing mesothelioma treatment or when recovering from mesothelioma surgery you won’t be heading down to the gym to run 20 miles on the treadmill or to complete a weightlifting session. However, light exercise can help with some of the side effects of treatment. Inactivity can cause fatigue, poor appetite and weakness.

People with mesothelioma can suffer a number of symptoms, including chest pain, troublesome breathing and lethargy and so they may not feel up to doing some exercise. However, they must avoid inactivity as this could make them feel worse.

They must be careful with what exercise they do, ensuring they don’t overdo it. Low impact activities such as yoga, tai chi, walking and swimming are recommended. Other activities that may help are jobs around the house. Tasks such as light hovering, dusting or folding laundry can also help prevent inactivity. Doing everyday tasks like this can also help in restoring a feeling of normality inbetween the chaos of medical appointments and on-going treatment.
