The lungs have two layers of cells called the pleura or the pleural membrane. The layers are only thin, measuring around the thickness of a balloon with the inner layer covering the lungs and the outer layer lining the inside of the ribcage.
Pleural plaques and pleural thickening
Pleural plaques are small areas of scarring on the pleura which cause patches of thickening. Generally, these do not cause symptoms and so in England and Wales, compensation is not available for pleural plaques. In rare cases, pleural plaques can be so extensive that they fuse together and cause breathlessness as the lung cannot inflate fully. In such rare circumstances, compensation can be claimed.
With pleural thickening, the scarring is more widespread or “diffuse” and can cause breathlessness and pain, particularly when taking a deep breath or coughing.
What causes pleural thickening?
Pleural thickening can be caused by a number of things:
- Infection
- Inflammatory conditions
- Pleural effusion (non-malignant)
- Asbestos exposure
For all of these causes, either one or both lungs could be affected.
Treatment for pleural thickening
Unfortunately, there is no available medication to treat those suffering with pleural thickening. However, if someone has severe impairment of their lung function, they can opt to undergo surgery to help relieve the symptoms.
