A company based in Stourbridge is currently developing a handheld asbestos analyser, the Asbestoprobe.

Crowdfunding

The company, Greenwall Environmental Group, has been raising funds for the project through Crowdcube, a crowdfunding website.

The device uses near infrared spectroscopy and AI software to analyse materials and determine whether asbestos is present. The whole process takes around 10 seconds to complete, giving an almost instant result.

Huge breakthrough

This is a huge breakthrough for any industry that may come across asbestos. Currently, to know if asbestos is present in materials, samples have to be obtained and sent to a laboratory and the results can take a few days to weeks to come back.

The company’s initial crowdfunding target was £150,000 and at the time of writing, they had secured £253,216 from 525 investors.

Asbestoprobe

The Asbestoprobe has the potential to save lives, allowing asbestos materials to be identified quickly, before they are damaged and the fibres can become airborne and become a danger.
