New research suggests that a compound found in flaxseeds may help to prevent asbestos-related diseases, including mesothelioma.
Flaxseed, also known as linseed, has many uses including the production of textiles, oil and food stuffs.
The compound
The compound, secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG) has been found to have powerful anti-inflammatory properties. It is also an anti-fibrotic and antioxidant resource.
The research
Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have studied the effects of a synthetic form of SDG on mice.
In an attempt to prevent the development of mesothelioma, the compound was given to the mice and three days later they were infected with amphibole asbestos fibres. After they had been exposed, the mice continued to receive the compound for a further three days.
It was found that the compound modulated the inflammatory response to the asbestos fibres. This means that the compound was helpful in reducing the body’s response to the asbestos fibres.
How does the response prevent mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma develops when asbestos fibres become lodged in the body’s tissues. The fibres cause irritation and this leads to scarring in the tissue. In some people, the cells’ reaction to the irritation causes a mutation and this is when mesothelioma develops.
By reducing the inflammation caused by the asbestos fibres, it could be possible to prevent mesothelioma from forming.
The future of mesothelioma
Currently there is no way to prevent mesothelioma other than avoiding exposure to asbestos. In the UK asbestos was banned in 2000 but is still present in many homes and buildings built before this time. Worldwide, many countries, including the USA, still use asbestos in some form.
If a treatment can be developed that prevents mesothelioma after exposure to asbestos, this would be very welcome news to all those at risk of asbestos exposure and disease.
