Every year, the first Friday of July marks Action Meso Day. This national day is dedicated to increasing awareness about asbestos and mesothelioma, honouring those who have lost their lives to the disease, supporting those currently affected and raising funds for research into mesothelioma treatments.
Understanding Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is an uncommon and aggressive cancer primarily targeting the mesothelium, the thin layer of tissue covering most internal organs. Most commonly, it affects the lungs (pleural mesothelioma), it is less common but can also develop in the abdominal lining (peritoneal mesothelioma) or the lining around the heart (pericardial mesothelioma) and is more rare in the lining of other organs.
The leading cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos. Once hailed as a wonder material due to its versatile and fireproof qualities, asbestos was used heavily in the construction industry in the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s. Use of the deadly material started to decline in the 1980’s and 90’s, until its use was completely banned in the UK in the year 2000.
When asbestos fibres are inhaled or ingested, they can become lodged in the mesothelium, causing chronic inflammation and cellular damage that eventually result in cancer.
Recognising Mesothelioma Symptoms
The symptoms of mesothelioma depend on its type and location. Pleural mesothelioma often presents with chest pain, shortness of breath, persistent coughing, and fluid accumulation around the lungs (pleural effusion). Peritoneal mesothelioma symptoms include abdominal pain, swelling, nausea, and unexplained weight loss. Pericardial mesothelioma can cause irregular heartbeats and breathing problems.
The Impact of Asbestos
Diseases caused by asbestos, including mesothelioma, pleural thickening and asbestosis, have a long latency period – the time between asbestos exposure and the appearance of symptoms – which can range from 10 to 50 years. Due to the latency period, although the prevalence of mesothelioma is expected to start declining, it will still be many years before the full extent of the legacy of asbestos seen.
Action Meso Day Activities
On Action Meso Day, we will leverage our online platforms to educate the public about the dangers of asbestos and highlight the symptoms of mesothelioma. Despite the UK banning asbestos in 2000, we still hear of recent exposures, and it is only through awareness and education that we can prevent more people being put at risk of developing mesothelioma.
Helena and Helen are looking forward to attending a local event hosted by the Cheshire Asbestos Victims Support Group (CAVSG). The morning will focus on well-being and remembering those affected by mesothelioma. We look forward to sharing what we learn.
