Every year, World Mesothelioma Day serves as an opportunity to remember those who have sadly lost their lives to mesothelioma, support those currently living with the disease, and raise awareness of a cancer that remains one of the most devastating consequences of asbestos exposure.

For many families, a mesothelioma diagnosis changes everything. It often arrives unexpectedly and decades after the original exposure to asbestos, leaving individuals and their loved ones facing not only a life limiting illness but also emotional, practical, and financial challenges. World Mesothelioma Day reminds us that no one should face the journey alone.

We can all support World Mesothelioma Day by remembering the courage shown by every person diagnosed with this disease and all those families who have been affected by it. At Oliver & Co Solicitors, we will honour the resilience of all of those who have stood through every appointment, every treatment, and every difficult day by lighting up the Chester Eastgate Clock in blue on Friday 3rd July.

You can get involved through simple acts such as wearing blue; donating to a mesothelioma charity; lighting a candle; or just pausing for a quiet moment of reflection.

What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive cancer that develops in the mesothelium, (the thin lining that surrounds the lungs, abdomen or heart). The most common form is pleural mesothelioma which affects the lining of the lungs.

Mesothelioma is usually caused by inhaling asbestos fibres. These microscopic fibres can become lodged in the body, where they trigger inflammation and cellular damage over many years. What makes mesothelioma particularly cruel is its long latency period. Typically, symptoms often do not appear until 20 to 60 years after a person’s exposure to asbestos, meaning many people have no idea they were ever at risk until they become seriously ill.

A diagnosis of mesothelioma is not limited to asbestos is not limited to those people who worked directly with asbestos. A person may have had secondary exposure to asbestos foe example through washing contaminated work clothes or through encounters in schools, public buildings, homes, or during renovation work.

A Diagnosis That Affects the Whole Family

Mesothelioma does not only affect the individual diagnosed; it impacts the whole family.

The diagnosis is often accompanied by uncertainty, difficult treatment decisions and the knowledge that there is currently no cure. Loved ones frequently become carers while coping with the emotional weight of watching someone they care about battle an aggressive disease.

Families may also face financial pressures and the process of seeking legal compensation for the asbestos exposure.

Behind every diagnosis there is a person and the people who love them. World Mesothelioma Day is about recognising every one of those stories.

How is Mesothelioma Diagnosed?

Diagnosing mesothelioma can be challenging because its symptoms include breathlessness, chest pain, fatigue, and a persistent cough which can resemble more common respiratory illnesses. Diagnosis usually involves a combination of taking a medical history, including possible asbestos exposure, conducting imaging tests such as chest x rays and CT scans, analysis of the fluid around the lungs, and a biopsy where a medical professional will examine tissue samples to confirm the diagnosis.

Why a Post-Mortem Can Be So Important

Sadly, mesothelioma can progress rapidly, and, in some cases, a definitive diagnosis may not be fully established during life.

When there is uncertainty as to whether a person’s exposure to asbestos has contributed to their death, a post-mortem examination will play a vital role in providing the additional pathological evidence needed to confirm a mesothelioma diagnosis.

This evidence can be invaluable in supporting compensation claims for surviving family members as it establishes the cause of death and ensures that families receive the compensation to which they may be entitled. While every case is different and legal requirements vary depending on the jurisdiction, families should seek advice as early as possible if they believe asbestos exposure contributed to a loved one’s illness or death.

It is also vital that a detailed asbestos exposure history is taken and preserved so that families know how their loved one was exposed to asbestos usually during their working life.
