One of the biggest asbestos producers in the world aims to ban the substance by the end of 2017. In June this year the Ministry of Health of Ukraine issued an order to prohibit the production and use of asbestos. The order will come in to force in six months.

Ukraine produced 65% of the World’s asbestos products:

Between 2009 and 2015, the country imported more than 40,000 tonnes of the deadly substance per year. Alongside Russia and Kazakhstan it was one of the main asbestos producers in the world. Overall, it produced a massive 65% of the world’s asbestos products.

There has been ferocious pro-asbestos lobbying in Kiev but, thankfully, the government has ignored this. They have taken the decision join the fifty-five other countries who have banned asbestos.

This is extremely welcome news to everyone at Asbestos Justice. The only way to prevent people from developing debilitating asbestos conditions such as mesothelioma, asbestosis and pleural thickening, is to stop the use of asbestos and to stop exposure to asbestos.

We now look forward to more countries joining those who have already taken a stance against asbestos.
