Understanding Two Serious Asbestos-Related Diseases

If you’ve recently been diagnosed with an asbestos-related illness, or a loved one has received a diagnosis, it’s completely understandable to have questions. Two of the most commonly discussed conditions are asbestosis and mesothelioma

Although both diseases are caused by exposure to asbestos, they are very different conditions. Understanding those differences can help you better understand your diagnosis, treatment options and whether you may be entitled to compensation.

What Is Asbestosis?

Asbestosis is a chronic lung disease caused by breathing in asbestos fibres over a prolonged period.

Once inhaled, the fibres become trapped in the lungs, causing inflammation and scarring of the lung tissue. Over time, this scarring makes it increasingly difficult for the lungs to expand and absorb oxygen.

Unlike mesothelioma, asbestosis is not cancer, but it is a serious, life-changing condition that can significantly affect quality of life.

The disease usually develops 20 to 40 years after asbestos exposure and is most commonly seen in people who worked in industries such as:

  • Construction
  • Shipbuilding
  • Plumbing
  • Boiler maintenance
  • Manufacturing
  • Electrical work
  • Insulation installation

What Is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive cancer caused almost exclusively by asbestos exposure.

Rather than affecting the lung tissue itself, mesothelioma develops in the lining surrounding the lungs (the pleura). Less commonly, it can develop in the lining of the abdomen or other organs.

One of the most challenging aspects of mesothelioma is its long latency period. Symptoms often do not appear until 15 to 60 years after exposure.

Sadly, many people diagnosed today were exposed to asbestos decades earlier, often before the dangers of asbestos were widely recognised.

The Main Differences Between Asbestosis and Mesothelioma

Asbestosis Mesothelioma
Non-cancerous lung disease Cancer affecting the lining of the lungs or other organs
Caused by long-term asbestos exposure Can develop after relatively low levels of exposure
Causes scarring of lung tissue Causes cancerous tumours
Usually develops gradually Often progresses more aggressively
Cannot be cured but symptoms can be managed Treatment aims to control the disease and improve quality of life

Although both illnesses share the same underlying cause, they affect the body in different ways and require different approaches to treatment.

Symptoms of Asbestosis

Symptoms often develop slowly and may become worse over time.

Common symptoms include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Persistent dry cough
  • Chest tightness
  • Fatigue
  • Wheezing
  • Clubbing of the fingertips in advanced cases

Many people initially mistake these symptoms for the natural effects of ageing or other respiratory illnesses.

Symptoms of Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma symptoms can also be difficult to recognise during the early stages.

These may include:

  • Chest pain
  • Persistent cough
  • Breathlessness
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Night sweats
  • Fluid around the lungs (pleural effusion)

Because these symptoms can resemble other conditions, prompt medical assessment is essential if you’ve ever been exposed to asbestos.

How Are They Diagnosed?

Doctors use different investigations depending on the suspected condition.

Diagnosis may include:

  • Chest X-rays
  • CT scans
  • MRI scans
  • Lung function tests
  • Blood tests
  • Biopsies
  • Pleural fluid analysis

Mesothelioma usually requires a tissue biopsy to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment Options

Treating Asbestosis

There is currently no cure for asbestosis.

Treatment focuses on improving symptoms and slowing disease progression. This may include:

  • Inhalers
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation
  • Oxygen therapy
  • Vaccinations against respiratory infections
  • Stopping smoking
  • Managing complications

Treating Mesothelioma

Treatment depends on the stage of the disease and the individual’s overall health.

Options may include:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Immunotherapy
  • Radiotherapy
  • Clinical trials
  • Specialist palliative care

Recent advances in immunotherapy have provided new treatment options for some patients with mesothelioma.

Can You Claim Compensation?

Many people diagnosed with either asbestosis or mesothelioma were exposed to asbestos while at work, often through no fault of their own.

You may be able to make a compensation claim if your illness resulted from negligent asbestos exposure, even if:

  • Your exposure happened decades ago.
  • Your former employer has gone out of business.
  • You’re retired.
  • You only discovered your illness recently.

In many cases, family members may also be entitled to bring a claim following the death of a loved one from an asbestos-related disease.

Seeking legal advice early can help ensure that any available compensation is pursued as quickly as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is mesothelioma the same as asbestosis?

No. Mesothelioma is a cancer, whereas asbestosis is a chronic lung disease caused by scarring of the lungs.

Which disease is more serious?

Both are serious conditions. Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer, while asbestosis is a progressive lung disease that can significantly impact breathing and quality of life.

Can you have both asbestosis and mesothelioma?

Yes. Some people develop both conditions following significant asbestos exposure.

Does everyone exposed to asbestos develop disease?

No. Many people exposed to asbestos never develop illness, but the risk increases depending on the amount, duration and type of exposure.

How long after asbestos exposure do symptoms appear?

Symptoms often appear between 20 and 60 years after exposure, depending on the condition.
