Historically valued for its resistance to heat, electricity and sound, asbestos was once extensively used in the construction industry. This led to its inclusion in numerous buildings before its eventual ban.
The problems arises when these asbestos-containing materials are disturbed or damaged, releasing harmful asbestos fibres into the air and leading to the risk of developing asbestos-related health conditions. As buildings age or undergo renovations, repairs or demolitions, the risk of exposure increases, as airborne fibres can be inhaled by those nearby.
Schools and hospitals are particularly concerning in this context. Despite the increased awareness and stringent regulations over recent years, many schools still harbour asbestos-containing materials. In fact, out of the 33,600 schools in the UK, 21,500 are reported to still contain asbestos. Teachers, students and other staff members are unknowingly exposed to these risks, with many unaware of the dangers lurking within the bu8ildings. According to the Joint Union Asbestos Committee, it is estimated that around10,000 pupils and teachers have tragically died due to asbestos exposure in schools.

Many of the symptoms of asbestos-related conditions, such as shortness of breath and coughing, can be confused with other, more common respiratory illnesses. This can lead to misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis, especially for individuals who were exposed to asbestos many years ago. Given the long latency periods of these diseases, many individuals may not immediately associate their symptoms with past exposure, particularly if they were unaware of the risks or have long since forgotten their exposure. This lack of awareness can result in delays in seeking proper medical attention, prolonging suffering and reducing the chances of effective treatment. Education and awareness are crucial in addressing this issue.
